Paola Gianturco has published four books since taking the "Publishing
the Photographic Book" workshop in Santa Fe with Sam Abell,
Leah Bendavid-Val, and Mim Adkins in 1999. Her most recent, Women
Who Light the Dark is now available from Powerhouse Books

All of Gianturco's books are philanthropic projects, for which she donates her
royalties to carefully-selected nonprofit organizations that relate to each book's
content. For Women Who Light the Dark, Gianturco is giving 100% of her
author royalties to the Global Fund for Women, which advocates for and defends
women's human rights by making grants to support women's groups. Paola is also

Workshops in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

© Ralph Lee Hopkins |
The
People and Culture of Colonial Mexico
with Ralph Lee Hopkins
November 4-10
Travel photography is currently experiencing a renaissance
in the digital world, where the lines between creativity,
art, and technology are disappearing, and digital
photography offers more control and creative possibilities
than ever before. This digital workshop explores
the creative aspects of travel photography in and
around the historic colonial town of San Miguel de
Allende, a magical place of rich culture and vibrant
colors.
We begin by reviewing such basics as shutter speed,
depth of field, lens choice, fill-flash, and exposure
using the histogram. We then venture “beyond
the camera,” learning to be in the moment,
recognizing and working with different qualities
of light, and discovering new ways to compose images
that capture the essence of place. Back in the classroom,
the emphasis is on learning an efficient workflow
for downloading, editing, and processing digital
images in Photoshop.
Our week includes daily discussions, thoughtful
critiques of the previous day’s work, and image
presentations on creative and technical aspects of
digital photography. Guided by Ralph and his assistant,
we take excursions through San Miguel and into the
surrounding countryside, with an emphasis on one-on-one
instruction. Assignments encourage experimentation,
and participants are challenged to expand their photographic
skills and imagination by combining the elements
of color and composition to produce pictures that
have both visual and emotional impact.

Revealing Portraits
with Robb Kendrick
November 11-17
Creating revealing photographic portraits is a challenging and rewarding art,
requiring the photographer both to know a particular subject and to have curiosity
and compassion for people in general. Composition, light, and trust are also
essential for a successful portrait.
We begin by viewing each other’s work and talking about goals. During
the week we discuss the work of other photographers, the genre of portrait
photography, the responsibility of photographers to their subjects, and ethics.
We photograph people on two specially arranged field trips and during our wanderings
through the vibrant streets of San Miguel de Allende. Daily group critiques
focus on light, composition, and connectedness to the subject. Robb is also
available for one-on-one critiques. He encourages pushing the envelope and
making mistakes, for we only grow by moving into the unknown.
Robb recommends that participants limit their equipment so they can focus
their time and effort on making photographs. Participants are also asked to
do some advance research on Mexico and its culture to facilitate approaching
and engaging people.

The Color of Mexico
with Arthur Meyerson
November 11-17
Mexico is an explosion of color, and San Miguel
de Allende is the perfect place to explore photography
and color. This workshop is designed for both amateur
and professional photographers wishing to take their
understanding and appreciation of color to a higher
level.
Through daily photo assignments, critiques, and
discussions, participants are encouraged to experiment
and take chances. The main focus is on investigating
light and color while working to establish your particular “visual
fingerprint.” Arthur guides and inspires participants
to see how their unique vision of the world can help
to develop and refine an individual style, for personal
enjoyment or commercial success.
The workshop begins with a review of each photographer’s
images and a discussion of personal and career goals.
In addition to addressing the aesthetics of color
photography, Arthur leads group critiques and consults
individually with each participant. Daily assignments
put classroom techniques into practice as we take
advantage of the incredible light and color of San
Miguel. Participants leave at the end of the week
with a more dynamic portfolio, a greater awareness
of their own strengths and weaknesses, and an enhanced
sensitivity to light and color.
